What is Edgemont?

Edgemont is a neighborhood defined by the borders of the Greenville Fire District (which is nearly identical to Edgemont Union Free School District). As an unincorporated area, we have no legal status and are governed by the Town of Greenburgh.

The Town controls our tax revenue and spending, our land use and planning, and most of our municipal services. Because we make up only 8% of the voting population in the Town, Edgemont is inherently limited in its ability to influence public policy in the Town, and Edgemont has no direct voice on Greenburgh’s Town Board.

The U.S. Census recognizes Edgemont as a “census designated place” because it is a “settled concentration of population identifiable by name but not legally incorporated.” Edgemont covers 2.6 square miles and has an estimated population of 7,100, which places it fourth largest in population and third largest in area among the existing six villages in Greenburgh, which are, in descending population size order, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings, Irvington, Elmsford, and Ardsley. The youngest of those villages is Elmsford (est. 1910). Other incorporated villages in Westchester with populations similar in size to Edgemont include Bronxville, Pelham, Larchmont, Pleasantville, and Briarcliff Manor.
